For the last few days I have been testing out Google Chrome for Linux. It has been available to Windows users for quite some time but only recently has a version been released for Linux users. My initial impressions are good but will it be enough to tempt me away from FireFox?
As a website developer I already have a few browsers installed, Opera, Firefox and Epiphany. I like to test out my own sites and those who ask me to check out problems. I do often seen minor difference between the browsers, such as text sizing and box sizes – CSS interpretation.
Chrome is another tool to test sites with and I am considering it as a replacement for Firefox mainly due to it's speed. However one thing it lacks so far is the huge range of add-ons that extend and enhance browsing.
I currently have installed Firebug which is great for debugging web pages. It allows you to inspect CSS, HTML, DOM and scripting. It can also give you an estimate on page loading times.
The Total Validator add-on checks your HTML to ensure it complies to standard. A handy tool for those who like to craft their own websites.
Until Chrome matures and has the sort of range of add-ons that Firefox has, I shall stick with what I normally use. Chrome is good for fast browsing but Firefox for me is a great tool for development and something I am used to.
The Google Chrome site should detect your operating system and offer the relevant download, this includes Mac users who can try out the Beta version.
