I have found a website in the UK that has a handy diagram and explanations of how ADSL works. It starts from your PC and shows how data travels all the way to the Internet. The Info comes from ThinkBroadBand, who is the UK's largest independent broadband news and information site.
Also there is a tool for finding out how fast your connection is. I have tried the test and the results are...
Date |
24/09/07 08:18:33 |
Speed Down |
982.95 Kbps ( 1 Mbps ) |
Speed Up |
748.38 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps ) |
Port |
8095 |
Server |
speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk |
They also provide a link to the results page which also has a graph showing comparative performances.
As you can see the speed is 1Mbps, I actually pay for a 8Mbps link. Even if you take in to consideration the test is conducted over the Internet to the UK, it is still too slow.
BroadBand speeds in the UK are being investigated by OffCom, see this BBC report - Broadband speeds under scrutiny
Try the test and leave a comment below with your paid-for-speed and your actual speed.
